Smart ideas for planning your closet

A little planning goes a long way. These homeowner-friendly tips will help you get the most out of your custom storage project and have a more productive conversation with your designer.

Start with what you actually store

Before thinking about looks, take inventory. Count your hanging items (long vs. short), fold-only items, shoes, and accessories. A closet designed around your real wardrobe works far better than one built to a generic template. Note any awkward items — long dresses, boots, luggage — that need dedicated space.

Use vertical space to the ceiling

Most closets waste the top 12–24 inches. Take cabinetry to the ceiling with a top shelf for seasonal or rarely used items. Double-hang rods in sections for shirts and folded pants to roughly double your hanging capacity compared to a single high rod.

Set a realistic budget — and a priority list

Custom storage ranges widely based on materials, accessories, and size. Decide which features matter most (drawers, a center island, glass-front cabinets, lighting) and rank them. A good designer can phase or substitute to hit your budget without sacrificing the essentials.

Do not skip the lighting

Lighting is the upgrade people notice most. LED strip lighting along shelves, rod lighting, and motion-activated fixtures make everything easier to see and give even a modest closet a boutique feel. Plan for it early so wiring can be handled cleanly.

Choose finishes you will still love in 10 years

Trendy colors can date quickly. Many homeowners choose a timeless neutral for the structure and add personality through hardware, wallpaper on a back panel, or accent lighting — elements that are easy and inexpensive to refresh later.

Invest in the accessories you use daily

Pull-out valet rods, belt and tie racks, jewelry drawers with felt liners, hampers, and pull-out shoe shelves are small costs that dramatically improve everyday use. Prioritize accessories for the items you interact with every single day.
